His hands still at her waist, Ty watched the crowd part to allow an old woman the honor of being the first to congratulate the bride and groom. “Lexi, you’re just about the prettiest bride I ever did see,” the old woman stated. She wrapped Lexi in a loving embrace, then stepped back, her gaze raking Ty from head to toe. “Boy, you don’t hardly look old enough to spawn a baby, let alone help birth one.”Lexi laughed. “Ty, this is Granny Applegate.”
He stared in disbelief at the tiny, old woman in front of him. When he’d first heard of Granny Applegate, he’d pictured an old crony in a flowing black cape, with stringy gray hair and a wart on the end of her nose. But in reality, the elderly lady wore a brightly colored housedress, had short, snow-white curls and one of the kindest faces he’d ever seen.
“Boy, if you don’t shut your mouth right quick, you’re gonna catch a bug,” Granny cackled.
“It’s nice to meet you,” he said, finally getting his vocal cords to work.
She patted his arm with a bony hand, her smile warm. “Later on, me and you are gonna have a talk, son.”
“We are?”
Granny nodded so vigorously, her white curls bobbed. “I’m gettin’ on in years and I’m thinkin’ you might be a good one to take over birthin’ the babies here on Piney Knob. But we’ll talk about that some other time.” She patted his arm again. “Welcome to the mountain, son.”
Ty didn’t have time to tell the old woman he’d be leaving in a few short months. For the next twenty minutes, he and Lexi were deluged with neighbors and friends expressing their heartfelt congratulations.
“You’ve got to see the decorations,” one of the women said, tugging Lexi from his side.
He regretfully watched a group of women lead his new wife across the yard to show her their handiwork. When Jeff and Freddie insisted they take the baby for the evening so he and Lexi could be alone, he had immediately started making plans for their wedding night. And they definitely hadn’t included a large, boisterous crowd.
“I wish you’d told me when I was at the clinic last month that you were lookin’ for a wife,” a young woman said, sauntering up to him. She pursed her bright red lips in an obviously well-practiced pout, batted her false eyelashes and ran a perfectly manicured, fake red fingernail along the satin lapel of his tux. “I’d have been more than happy to apply for the job.”
Ty was saved from having to comment when Jeff came to stand beside him. “Mary Ann, I saw Jake Sanders over by the punch bowl a few minutes ago. He was lookin’ mighty lonely and I think I heard him ask where you were.” Jeff winked as he place Matthew into Ty’s arms.
The dark-haired young woman brightened instantly. “See you later, boys,” she called, hurrying across the yard.
“Thanks,” Ty said, grateful for Jeff’s intervention. He cradled his son to his chest as he watched Mary Ann zero in on her next unsuspecting victim.
